In June 2004, a group of 19 linguists from 6 countries released a 2000 word document entitled Guidelines for the Use of Language Analysis in Relation to Questions of National Origin in Refugee Cases (hereafter "the Guidelines"). This paper aims to explain the origin and motivation, development, authorship and content of these Guidelines, as well as their scholarly and judicial status.
