Research Background To date there has been minimal scholarly attention to analysing the lives and work of Australian actors, and their artistic contributions, to the massive expansion and development of our multi-million dollar culture industries, from 1950 to the present. This research answers the questions: what is the contribution of each of these Australian actors to the development of theatre, television and film in Australia over the last half century? What did they contribute individually to Australian acting, writing and production? How have the actors contributed to the transformation of acting and of drama, and to the professionalisation and internationalisation of the industries? What is the historical and contemporary significance of these actors to acting, drama, television and film? Research Contribution This project, Players: Australian Actors on Stage, Television and Film, a series of peer reviewed online essays, documents for the first time the lives and work of a set of Australian actors, drawing on full life interviews conducted by Professor Pender, archival research on the careers of the actors and analysis of hundreds of hours of video footage of actors performing. The research analyses the individual contributions of a range of actors in the context of the development of theatre, television and film in a period of extraordinary social, political and technological change. Research Significance The significance of this research derives from the fact that it is the first research to document and analyse comprehensively the work of Australian actors over the most dynamic period in Australian theatre history (1950-present) using a large number of source materials, including full life interviews conducted by Professor Pender, in addition to a wealth of archival material provided exclusively to Professor Pender by the National Film and Sound Archive, National Library of Australia and other significant private and public collections in Australia and the UK.en
