- PublicationRegulating Foreign Direct Investment for Development: Perspectives from Bangladesh
This book offers a comprehensive overview of the relationship between Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) regulation and sustainable development in Bangladesh.
It is widely accepted that FDI-induced development is essential for the growth of undeveloped economies, but it can create a conflict between the investors' goal of profit maximisation and the host state's pursuit of economic gains. FDI-induced development is especially important for the economy of Bangladesh, the focus of this book, which argues that a balanced regulatory approach is necessary to ensure that FDI benefits all stakeholders. In examining Bangladesh's FDI regulatory regime, the authors reveal that it is investor-centric and lacks a development-oriented approach. They discuss the relevant laws, practices, mechanisms, and institutions that govern the entrance regulations and incentives for foreign investment, as well as the protection of the environment and human rights, with special attention to labour rights, involuntary displacement, and the protection of both the investors and the state in which they invest. From this analysis, the book recommends reforms to introduce development as a primary goal while maintaining Bangladesh's appeal as an FDI destination.
The book will be of interest to researchers, students, and academics in the fields of economics, politics, sustainable development, and economic growth. It will also be of great interest to FDI strategists, policymakers, negotiators, administrators, and legislators in creating a balanced regulatory regime to attract FDIs for development.
- PublicationThe Australian Army Uniform and the Government Clothing Factory
This book reveals the business history of the Australian Government Clothing Factory as it introduced innovative changes in the production and design of the Australian Army uniform during the twentieth century. While adopting a Schumpeterian interpretation of the concept of innovation, Anneke van Mosseveld traces the driving forces behind innovation and delivers a comprehensive explanation of the resulting changes in the combat uniform. Using an array of archival sources, this book displays details of extensive collaborations between the factory, the Army and scientists in the development of camouflage patterns and military textiles. It uncovers a system of intellectual property management to protect the designs of the uniform, and delivers new insights into the wider economic influences and industry linkages of the Government owned factory.
- PublicationMaria Island: History and Landscapes 1825-1930
"Maria Island's European history is one of exploration and dispossession, incarceration and labour, resources and exploitation, entrepreneurship and tourism. This book is structured around four key touchstones from Maria Island's recent past - the two phases of convict occupation during the Penal Period (1825 - 32) and the Probation Period (1842 - 52), the optimistic tenure of the Bernacchi Period (1884 - 96), and the resource exploitation of the Industrial Period (1920 - 30). Of course, Maria Island's story stretches both backwards and forwards from these points, stories in which Aboriginals, whalers, farmers and park rangers figure prominently. Yet the landscape that we see today was primarily shaped by these four periods of occupation and it is through them that we can best piece together some of the story of this remarkable island."
