dc.description.abstract |
This PETAA Paper provides vital insights into the major types of First Nations language ecologies on a national scale and shows how this translates into teaching considerations in schools - providing the knowledge and advice teachers need when differentiating planning, pedagogy and resources. The paper looks at the ramifications of language ecologies for guiding teaching, particularly English teaching, and examines different uses of literature depending on each ecology.
| en |

local.researchstatement |
Research background: This research communication paper examines the language repertoires of Indigenous school children with the aim of communicating these in a meaningful framework to educational practitioners and policy makers, and showing how these types of repertoires can be supported through the use of literature in school classrooms.

Research contribution: The paper innovates and applies new knowledge in its formulation of types of repertoires into language ecology zones, and links this to the selection of school-based literacy resources. It examines the ramifications of language ecologies for guiding English teaching, which is not previously discussed in this format.

Research significance: The paper is significant in its communication of complex Indigenous language repertoire types to the membership of a key industry professional organisation – the Primary English Teaching Association of Australia. In addition, it’s further significance is in communicating different uses of literature depending on language ecology for this industry group.
| en |
